How to prime a coil for a pod, a tank or a mesh

Most guides on how to prime a coil give one recipe for everything, a few drops, a short wait, then the first puff. Yet a tank coil, a coil that pushes into a pod cartridge and a cartridge with a built-in coil do not give you the same access to the cotton. The manufacturers themselves do not agree on the waiting time or the steps. Before filling up, you need to know which type of coil you are dealing with.

How to prime a coil, what changes with the type

Priming means soaking a coil’s cotton before it heats for the first time. With a tank coil or a removable pod coil, you put a few drops on the cotton openings before fitting it, fill up, then wait. With a cartridge whose coil is built in, the cotton can only be reached through the reservoir, so the waiting time and a few unpowered draws do all the work.

In every case, we suggest taking the first puffs at the bottom of the power range. The table sums up the steps by type, based on instructions published by Geekvape, Voopoo and Lost Vape.

Manufacturer instructions do not match

The three brands describe how to prime a coil with differences that matter. Putting them side by side shows there is no universal waiting time, and that each instruction suits a particular type of coil.

Geekvape says to wait 3 to 5 minutes after filling, and 5 minutes for its P series. To speed things up, it offers two methods, a few drops placed on the cotton through the openings before fitting, and a few gentle draws with the device off and the airflow reduced.

Voopoo recommends filling about 70% of the reservoir to soak the coil fully, then waiting 5 minutes. In a UK tank capped at 2 ml, that is about 1.4 ml. Its FAQ adds several draws without switching the device on, and first puffs at reduced power.

Lost Vape asks you to wet the inlet and the top of the cotton until it looks moist but not flooded, leave it for a few minutes, then take a few puffs at low power.

How to prime a coil, type by type

The principle is the same everywhere, but access to the cotton, the size of the openings and the space available change from one coil to the next. Those three points are what alter the steps.

Tank coil

Tank coils have wide side openings and cotton visible from the top. Place drops on each opening, then on the top, turning the coil as you go. Keep the central chimney, where the air flows, dry, otherwise the excess comes back through the airflow or into your mouth.

Once the coil is fitted and the tank filled, Geekvape allows 3 to 5 minutes on the Z Subohm Tank 5. You can screw the tank back onto the mod in the meantime, as long as you do not press the fire button.

Pod coil that pushes in

Coils that push into a pod cartridge are narrower, with smaller openings. Put the drops on before inserting the coil, holding it in your hand, as Geekvape’s method describes, because once it is in place its openings are out of reach.

The cartridge is then filled to about 70%, following Voopoo’s advice, and left for 5 minutes.

Cartridge with a built-in coil

On a cartridge with the coil fixed inside, such as Geekvape’s Q and J cartridges, no drop can reach the cotton directly. Everything goes through the reservoir. Fill it, let it stand, then take several draws without firing, which Voopoo recommends for its own pods.

The waiting time then becomes the only lever. Nothing stops you from making it longer, whereas a rushed first puff damages a part that can only be replaced along with the whole cartridge.

Mesh slot or small wire opening

On Lost Vape’s official product images, mesh coils made for direct lung have a long slot, while mouth to lung coils with conventional wire, such as the 1 ohm Ultra Boost MTL, have only a small round opening. A drop soaks in more slowly through a narrow hole, and each one should be absorbed before the next.

The e-liquid works in the same direction. Geekvape points out that high VG e-liquid is thicker and wicks more slowly, and Lost Vape notes that such blends need a longer preheat. A thick e-liquid in a coil with a small opening therefore calls for the longest wait.

The first puffs after priming

Priming does not end with the waiting time. Voopoo and Lost Vape both say to start low, the first by setting the device to reduced power before vaping, the second with a few low-power puffs. Geekvape, for its part, asks that the device setting matches the coil’s rated range. Starting at the bottom of the range printed on the coil, then stepping up gradually, gives the cotton time to settle.

Do you need to prime again at every refill?

No. Geekvape’s instructions for the Z Subohm Tank 5 state that the 3 to 5 minute wait applies when fitting a new coil and can be skipped on a simple refill.

How many drops should you use?

Geekvape talks about a few drops, Lost Vape about cotton that looks moist without being flooded. The guide is visual, with evenly damp cotton in each opening and no drop beading on the outside.

Why reduce the airflow during unpowered draws?

That is Geekvape’s instruction for its draw method, which the brand presents as a way to help the e-liquid soak in faster. A few gentle draws are enough, with the device switched off.

Does a mod’s preheat mode replace priming?

No. Lost Vape describes a preheat on the Thelema Elite S made of 1 to 3 second pulses, designed for flavour, and presents it as an addition to soaking the cotton by hand, not a substitute.

Do you prime a rebuildable deck?

Yes, although the step changes because you fit the cotton yourself. Soak it directly before closing the deck. For its RBA decks, Voopoo stresses cotton that is well packed, to avoid leaks.

The principle does not change, soak the cotton before the first heat, but access to the cotton changes everything.
